5 Year (Post Radiation) Anniversary!

Five years ago yesterday was my final radiation treatment.  I know that several different head/neck cancer blogs have links to my page, so if you are reading this and are going through (or about to go through) radiation treatment… this is for you:

You can do it! There were times that I thought that the last treatment would never get here.  Keep pushing! As much as everyone wants to help, no one can do it for you. It is something that you can and will do for yourself.  I did it and if I can do it, you can do it! I’m no superman or tough guy, but I wanted to live so I had to fight for it.  You can do it!

Here’s a little something that was never discussed on my blog during my radiation: I thought that I had 30 treatments to go through and on the day of my 15th treatment, I found out that I actually was getting 33 treatments.  It was only “3 more”, but to have thought that I had made it past the halfway mark and to be told that I wasn’t there yet was devastating.  Unless you have been there or are there now, you can’t understand what a blow that is…  It felt like I slid backwards in my forward progress, but I was still on track.  I just didn’t know what the track was 🙂

Don’t ever get discouraged.  Your struggles and pains are not unique.  Tons of us have been there and you can make it.

Snatch the pebble…

I met with my Radiation Oncologist on Friday – before leaving her office, I was given 3 more doctor’s appointments before I can start radiation.

Monday – I have to go to the dentist to have my teeth examined prior to radiation.
Tuesday – meet with Speech Pathologist to learn swallowing exercises that may help during radiation.
Next Tuesday – meet with Chemotherapist to discuss the use of chemotherapy with my type of cancer.

After this, I need to have a radiation “simulation” where I go through the steps of getting a radiation treatment, but without the radiation. A week or so after the simulation, I can start my radiation treatments.carradine.jpg

I know all of this is necessary, but I can’t help but feel that this gauntlet of exams and office visits are a series of trials that are meant to either break me or make me stronger. On the last day of my treatment, I expect to see Master Kan – or maybe David Carradine… I’m snatching that pebble.

What? You don’t watch Kung Fu? Explaining it ruins the fun… Oh well, in the classic TV show Kung Fu, Master Kan points to a pebble in the open palm of his hand and tells Caine “As quickly as you can… snatch the pebble from my hand.”
Caine grabs for the stone but Kan’s hand closes before he can get to it.
Kan tells Caine, “When you can take the pebble from my hand, it will be time for you to leave.”

See you get it now…
